The Manyara Tilapia is a strangely-shaped cichlid native to Lake Manyara and related lakes in northern Tanzania.
Manyara is a fairly saline lake.
The tilapia grows to 28cm in length. Breeding males (above left) have a pinkish upper body with black or
charcoal grey heads, undersides and fins (except tail).
The fish is endangered by fishing and by human introduction of other tilapias into the lake, including the Nile Tilapia among others.
