The Splash Tetra, also called the Splashing Tetra or Spraying Characin, is native to shallow streams, creeks and wetlands in tropical South America. It is closer to the Pencilfish than to the Tetras and has no adipose fin. They are shoaling fish that grow to 3-4cm long.
The "Splashing" name relates to the behaviour of the male as he cares for the eggs. After courtship, both male and female leap clear of the water onto a low-hanging leaf where the female lays eggs and the male fertilises them; he then spends the next couple of days splashing the eggs with water now and then to keep them moist until they hatch.
