The Royal Tetra is native to tributaries of the Aripuanã River of Brazil. It is also called the Kerri Tetra (and sometimes, erroneously, the Purple or Blue Emperor, but the Emperors are a different genus with different characteristics, eg. no adipose fin).

Males are more colourful with longer fins. They grow to some 4cm long. Females scatter eggs and show no parental care.
