One of the most attractive African tetras with its irridescent colours and long, ragged fins,
is the Congo Tetra, which is native to rivers and streams of the central Congo River basin.
Males are larger, growing to some 9cm long and have longer dorsal fins which can reach their tail fins
(with the small tetra adipose fin between the two), longer anal fins and more ragged tail fins. Females reach 6-7cm long
and don't have such elongated fins.
Diet is small invertebrates and plant matter. Eggs are scattered when spawning.
Is the black-bellied one above right a Congo Tetra? The colours suggest it must be. Despite being so brightly
coloured, the dorsal and tail fins suggest a female or even juvenile, neither of which should have such bright colour.
