The Pumpkinseed is a Sunfish native to lakes, ponds and slow-moving freshwater of North America. It has been introduced to Europe, including the southern UK, where it is an invasive fish outcompeting native fish for resources.

They are colourful fish growing to some 10cm long (but exceptionally can reach some 30cm). Males have more vibrant colour than females. They feed on crustaceans, amphibians, invertebrate larvae and small fish, including fry of their own species.
