The Striped Silver Dollar, also called Tiger-striped Silver Dollar or Tetra, looks similar to the striped variant or subspecies of its relative Metynnis hypsauchen fasciatus and both usually have the black blotch behind the eye (the red blotch may indicate breeding condition?). Both have the longer adipose fin and shorter, more upright dorsal fin of the Metynnis genus. The Striped Silver Dollar is native to the middle Amazon basin. Its base colour is silver but with a greenish-gold sheen and, like its relatives, it can have a red hooked anal fin when breeding. It grows to some 15cm long.
