The Silver Mylossoma is native to the Amazon, Orinoco and La Plata river basins in tropical South America.
In 2018 a case was made for the Amazon and Orinoco populations to be classified to a new separate species (M. albiscopum).
A shiny silver fish with a red half eye-ring, an upright dorsal fin, a button adipose fin and a dark-edged
anal fin, it grows to 25cm (10 inches) long. They live in large groups.
In the wet season, they migrate from lakes and rivers to the flooded forest to eat (fruit and seeds) and breed.
