The Black-barred Silver Dollar is also called the Black Bar Silver Dollar/Myleus and the Disk Tetra/Pacu. It has a roundish, flat silver body with a vertical black bar on each flank. It has a slightly larger adipose fin than the typical button-like fin of the Myleus although still small, but also has the upright dorsal fin of the Metynnis Silver Dollars. Its hooked anal fin reddens when breeding.

Not all Black-barreds show the black bar distinctly, or at all. Some develop black shading on the lower flank when breeding, with or without the black bar.
