The Red Rainbowfish is native to shallow, vegetated waters of and around Lake Sentani in West Papua, Indonesia
but threatened by human incursion.
Breeding males are bright red and develop deep bodies and high backs with age. They can vary their red to crimson hue with mood and
to display to females and rivals. Females are olive-brown and non-breeding males reddish brown.
They can grow to 12cm long typically and 15cm exceptionally. Like other Rainbowfish, eggs are scattered on plants.
(The Sentani Rainbowfish, a separate species and genus, Chilatherina sentaniensis is also endemic to streams in the area
but is no longer present in the lake itself and is also threatened.)
