The Monterrey Platyfish used to inhabit well-vegetated streams and small ponds in the San Juan basin region near Monterrey, Mexico, but is now feared extinct in the wild. A "live-bearer" (female gives birth to live young), it has been exterminated by water extraction for agriculture, habitat dry-out from urban sprawl and out-competition from non-native fish.
Monterrey Platyfish The male is smaller and darker, reaching 4cm long.
Monterrey Platyfish The female is paler and larger, growing to 6cm long.
