The Nile Perch, also called the Goliath Perch and African Barramundi, is a large, predatory fish native
not only to the Nile but also to other African waterways including the Congo, Niger, Gambia, Senegal and Lake Chad, among others.
It can tolerate brakish waters and has also been introduced as a seriously invasive predator to the Rift Valley lakes (Victoria,
Tanzania and Malawi, among others.)
A silvery fish, it is one of the largest freshwater fish in Africa and can grow to nearly 2 metres long
(6ft 7in). It is a schooling fish for its own protection (from crocodiles and other predators) but will eat most other fish
(including its own species) and most other prey (crustaceans, molluscs, insects, other invertebrates.)
It is a commercially important food and angling fish (hence its introduction outside its native range.)
