The Payara is native to deep waters of the Amazon basin. It is one of a group of predatory fish called dogtooth characins or vampire tetras.

It has two fangs protruding from its jaw, used to impale its prey (mostly fish). It grows typically to some 30cm (1 foot) long, but can reach half a metre.
