Cornish Jack is a mormyrid (elephant fish with a weak electric field for navigation, communication and hunting nocturnal prey), named after young pike by British settlers. It has an elongated body and round snout. It is native to quiet river, stream and lake beds over much of subSaharan Africa, from Senegal to the White Nile, the Congo Basin, the Great Rift Lakes and south to the Zambezi.

The largest of the Mormyrids, it can grow to 1.5 metres long and is a sport and human food fish in its native range. Juveniles seek insect larvae and shrimp along river banks while adults seek deep, still waters and hunt fish at night.
