The Threespot (Three-spot, Three Spot, Frederic's) Leporinus is native to fast-flowing or moderate waters of the Amazon
and Orinoco Basins and Guyana Shield.
It usually shows three black spots on each flank (top row) but can show a fourth (less distinct, above right)
or more small spots. It grows to 40cm long.
Some appear to have only one clear spot and some appear almost spotless. Like other Leporinus, it gathers in large shoals.
It eats mainly fruit, seeds and termites.
The Dot Dash Leporinus usually has a squarer spot between the dorsal and pelvic fins followed by one or
more rounder spots. It can look remarkably similar to the Threespot and can have a series of black rectangular and roundish
spots along its lateral line. It is native to the Orinoco basin of Venezuela and Colombia and grows to 30cm long.
Some of those shown above as Threespot (with Piranha) may be Dot Dash Leporinus.
The Strawberry Leporinus, also called Grant's and Strawberry Headstander, with its pink markings and black spots
(sometimes a light-bordered black line, as above, similar to the Lipstick Leporinus) is native to French Guiana, Guyana, Surimame and, possibly,
Colombia drainage systems of the Orinoco.
A smaller leporinus, it grows to some 15cm long. They live in small shoals.
The Suriname Leporinus, as its name suggests, is native to basins of Suriname, French Guyana and northern Brazil.
A large leporinus, it can reach 45cm long. It typically has thre or four black spots along the lateral line and red pelvic and anal fins.
