Gudgeon with minnow
Gudgeon with smelt
The Gudgeon, called just the Gudgeon despite there being other species called gudgeons worldwide, is native to streams and lakes of temperate Eurasia. It grows to some 12cm long. It has a row of dark spots along its flanks. It is gregarious with its own kind and other small fish (above with minnow and with European freshwater smelt) and emits squeaking sounds to communicate. They feed on invertebrates off the river bed or lake floor.
