The Giant Gourami is a large freshwater fish native to southeast Asia.
As it reaches adulthood, its lower lip expands and it develops a hump on its forehead which continues to grow for life.
Adults reach a length of some 50-70cm (20-28 inches).
It dwarfs most other fish in its habitat but is a similar length to the Dragonfish, above right.
It lives in slow-moving waters and eats fish, frogs, weeds and carrion. It can breathe moist air for some time
when out of the water.
