The Southern Redbelly Dace is native to streams and clear, flowing water of eastern/central USA from New York state to Alabama and the Midwest (Ohio, Missouri and Mississippi basins). It develops a red belly when breeding. Typically 6cm long, it can reach 9cm. The Northern Redbelly species looks similar but has some visual and habitual differences.
