The Transvestite Dwarf Cichlid is endemic to shallows of Lake Mai-Ndombe in the D.R. Congo. The name is due to the fact that, in a reversal of usual colouring, the female is conspicuous with black and white banding and a bright cherry-red belly while the male is plain grey-brown with shadow stripes. They reach a length of 3.5cm. They are critically endangered, mainly through the use of mosquito netting for indiscriminate fishing from the lake, removing fish of all sizes.
