The attractive Spotcheek Cichlid, with pale blue-turquoise speckles and a large black spot on its gills and flanks,
is native to waters around the Papaloapan River of eastern Mexico.

Males reach a length of some 15cm (6 inches). Males select a spot for the female to lay eggs which he
then fertilises and guards. Once they hatch, both parents move, protect and teach the young.
