The Severum is a cichlid native to slow tropical fresh waters of the upper Orinoco and Rio Negro basins.
Its relative Heros efasciatus of the Amazon Basin is also often called a Severum.
It is sometimes called the Orange or Red Shoulder Severum. Diet is varied including invertebrates and fruit.
Males reach a length of some 20cm.
Parents are aggressive when breeding and both guard eggs and young, including mouth brooding of young.
