The Atabo Red Pike Cichlid, also called Atabapo Red, is one of several Pike Cichlids, all native to South American
slow-moving rivers and lakes, this one to the lower Amazon Basin (Guyana, Suriname and northern Brazil). The name "Atabo" or "Atabapo"
distinguishes it from the related Tapajos Red Pike Cichlid.
Most Pike cichlids, including the Red, have habits similar to the unrelated (Northern) Pike, being predator
fish eating any fish (or animal) that it can fit in its large mouth.
Males have a thin, white stripe along the top of the dorsal fin. Females develop a stronger red-pink colour.
The fish can grow to some 40cm (16 in) long. Its strong jaws can crush shells.
