The African or Red (Neon) Jewel Cichlid, with turquoise blue "jewel" spots and black blotches on its cherry red body,
is native to rivers and streams of West Africa. It grows to 15cm long and is aggressive to other fish. Other fish in the Hemichromis
genus are also native to Africa and are also called "Jewel" cichlids. Some can look similar, especially the Blood-red Jewel, H. lifalili,
of the Congo basin.
