Eartheater (Earth-eater) cichlids are named after the way they suck mud or sand into their extendable mouth
before filtering it for small invertebrates and detritus to eat and expelling the residue. Despite the Three-spot Eartheater's
scientific name daemon, the Demon Eartheater is a related species.
The Three-spot Eartheater is native to slow-moving water of the Rio Negro and Orinoco.
Males can reach a length of 30cm (one foot). Females lay eggs in a pit and cover with sand/soil; hatchlings have to find their own way to the surface.
