Several Madagascan cichlids are called "Dambas", with a name preceeding the word but this one is usually
known simply as "The Damba". It is endemic to river basins of northwestern Madagascar. It is the largest in its genus and can reach
40cm long but is typically 20-30cm. It has a reddish face and a black blotch on the base of each pectoral fin.
Like other Madagascan fish and wildlife, it is vulnerable through severe habitat loss and in addition,
as with other Dambas, it suffers from over-fishing and from invasive species such as tilapia and snakeheads.
