The Cockatoo Cichlid, also called Cockatoo Dwarf Cichlid, is native to the Amazon river basin.
Males, above, are more flamboyant than females, with tall red and black flowing fins, and are nearly twice the size at up to 8cm long.
They are territorial.
Females reach up to 5cm long with a dull yellow background colour (brighter when breeding) and the same dark
line along the flank and from eye to gill as the males. There are also "submissive males" that look like females to obtain a chance
to breed with the female(s) of an aggressive alpha male (and will develop full male fins if the alpha dies or is removed).
