The Convict Cichlid, also called Zebra Cichlid (as are many of Africa's lake cichlids), is native to
Central America, now defined as the northern populations from Guatemala to El Salvador/Honduras.
Adult males are grey, blue-grey or white (depending on region) with 8-9 black stripes and grow to some 10-12cm long.
Their longer fins often taper to filaments. Unusually for fish, the smaller females are more colourful, with red, pink or orange
(depending on region) on the belly and dorsal fin. Both convicts have a black spot on the gill cover and a guilty expression.
