The Bluestreak Hap Cichlid (also called Electric Yellow Lab in the aquarium trade) is native to rocky areas in
medium-deep waters of the central west side of Lake Malawi in East Africa.
Both males and females are bright yellow with a blue-black line along the top and lower fins. Some may have shadow black
or grey vertical stripes. They grow to 10-15cm (4-6 inches) long.
Shoaling species, like many Malawi cichlids, males have "egg spots" on the back of anal fins to guide females
to the area to fertilise eggs. Females are mouth brooders, guarding their fertilised eggs in their mouth until they hatch and
protecting the hatchlings in their mouth.
