The Brown Acara is a cichlid native to freshwater of southeast Brazil. It grows to some 13-14cm long. It is closely related to the similar Black Acara, Cichlasoma bimaculatum, of northeastern South America but only distantly related to the Blue Acara, Andinoacara pulcher of Venezuela and Trinidad. Females can transition to reproductive males. Both parents guard their eggs.
