The Nile Tetra, also called Silversides, is an African characin capable of growing to over 40 cm,
so not your typical "Tetra". A silvery fish, it has a red or orange lower caudal fin.
It is native to many river systems in West Africa (Niger, Chad, Gambia, others) and used to be
prevalent along the Nile as well as the lakes of East Africa but is now confined to the upper Nile, White Nile and
Lake Albert since the construction of the Aswan Dam restricted its movement down river.
Despite its size, it feeds mainly on vegetation, plankton and detritus.
