The beautiful, glistening Sabaleta (one of two South American fish with that name) is also called
the Rainbow Characin and Rainbow Tetra.
It is native to slow-running streams of the lowlands on the Pacific side of southwestern Ecuador.
Females grow to some 10 cm and males up to 17cm long.
Males have longer fins, including red-edged anal fins. They guard their nests and help with egg care.
