The Burbot, the only species in its genus, is a freshwater member of the cod family. Looking like an eel with its
elongated body, it is closely related to the marine rockling and ling. It is native to cold freshwater lakes and rivers of much of the
northern hemisphere including the US Great Lakes and continental Eurasia, but in the late 20th century was declared probably extinct in the UK.
It can be found in brackish water, particularly when spawning (eg in Baltic estuaries). It has a single barbel on its chin (the name burbot is
from barba, beard) and grows typically to 30-70cm long (but exceptionally can reach 1.2 metres).
