The Brycon Hilary or Hilary's Brycon, one of several similar species also called the Piraputanga, is native mainly to the Paraguay and Parana rivers but may also be pesent in other clear, oxygen-rich waters of the upper Amazon basin such as the Uruguay and La plata. A medium-large, silvery fish with a defining red tail split by a black line, it grows to 50-56cm long.

There is some evidence of migration and of some populations being genetically distinct from others. With this in mind, the fish above appear to have traits of both the Brycon Hilary (the red tail with black centre - but not from a black lateral line or caudal wrist) and the Amazon Brycon, B. amazonicus (the black line by the silvery anal fin). They may be hybrids.
