Looking and behaving like a fish-amphibian hybrid, the Mokelembembe Bichir, sometimes seen as two words: Mokele mbembe, is native to lakes, rivers, streams and swamps of the central Congo Basin. Previously considered a morph of the West African Bichir, P. retropinnis, it was split out as a species in 2006. One of the smallest bichirs, the Mokelembembe Bichir can grow to 36cm long. Colour and patterns are variable. The name, as two words, is the name of a mythological creature which may have been an actual dinosaur of the Congo Basin.
