The Striped Barb is native to still and slow, vegetated and black waters of Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand.
It grows to some 10cm long, has small barbels (not always visible) and is a gregarious, shoaling fish. (Two related fish look similar:
D. trifasciatus of Borneo which is a similar size and D. gemellus of S. Borneo and S. Sumatra which is smaller.
The adult Lined Barb, Striuntius (also Barbus/Puntius) lineatus, also of similar habitat in Malaysia and Indonesia, also looks similar
but is half the size and has no barbels. Juvenile Lined are laterally striped like the adult whereas the juveniles of the Striped genus are vertically barred.)
