The Black Ruby Barb is endemic to forest hill streams of Sri Lanka. Populations are vulnerable, particularly
due to habitat loss and export for the aquarium trade.
Juveniles are pale yellowish with three black bars; adult females turn silver with black bars. The
breeding male develops a fuchsia red colour. They grow to 6-8cm long.
The Bandula Barb is endemic to only one stream in Sri Lanka and critically vulnerable.
It looks a little like the Black Ruby but with only two black bars. The breeding male also turns a fuchsia red.
Conservationists have established a small "insurance" population at a nearby forest site.
