The Melon Barb is native to calm, well vegetated rivers and streams of the Western Ghats range in southwestern India.
A shoaling species, they grow to 7cm long.

Breeding males develop a red-pink hue. Moreover, the species' colours vary somewhat with altitude, being
more orange at higher altitude and more purple nearer the coast.
