The Ardens Barb is endemic to river systems of the Western Ghats in southwestern India. "Ardens" means fiery or burning and
refers to the red chest and orange-tipped dorsal and anal fins of the male, above left/centre. The female, with white fin tips and chest, is above right.
It looks similar to several other Barilius species but is distinguished by the male's red-tipped dorsal and anal fins
and a greenish flank. It is occasionally referred to as the Indian Trout Barb, which can confuse it with another carp-related fish with the same
common name, Raiamas bola, which has spots rather than bars and is native to the Bay of Bengal.
