In addition to the usual squirrelfish lateral red and white stripes, it has a black spot at the front of its dorsal fin, visible only when the fin and its venomous spines are raised. It grows to some 15cm long and is mainly a nocturnal predator of small crustaceans.

The Redcoat Squirrelfish is native to the Indo-westPacific. It has lateral red and white stripes like several other squirrelfish, grows to some 32cm long and is mainly nocturnal.
It has three black spots like the Threespot Squirrelfish, S. cornutum, but its white and red lines are generally further apart and the pelvic fins are black-tipped, unlike the Threespot.
