The Longspine Squirrelfish is native to reefs of the Caribbean from southeastern USA to northern Brazil. They grow to some 20cm long typically but can reach 35cm.

They have painful, venomous spines on their yellow dorsal fin, particularly an elongated spine at the back. They are big-eyed, mainly nocturnal and can make sounds to defend territory and startle predators.
