The Silver Moony is native to Indian Ocean and western Pacific coasts, including marine salt water, brackish
estuary and mangrove waters and even some freshwater areas. Moonies are one of the most tolerant fish over levels or lack of salinity.
It has several names over its range including Silver Moonfish, Silver Batfish, Diamond Fish, Round Moony, Butter Bream and,
in line with its scientific name of Monodactylus, Fingerfish (not fish fingers) - the last because sometimes its elongated fin
can seem like a finger.
It is usually a schooling fish, sometimes forming large shoals. It can grow to 25cm long.
They reflect silver in the light.
Head on, they are really thin.
Juveniles have blackstripes on their front which disappear in adulthood.
