The African Moony is native to coastal areas of West Africa, including marine salt water, brackish
estuary and mangrove waters and even some freshwater areas. Moonies are one of the most tolerant fish over levels or lack of salinity.
It can grow to 25cm long but it can be taller than it is long since the tip of the dorsal and anal fins can be 30cm apart.
Adult.
Juveniles have blackstripes which disappear in adulthood.
An elderly, finless, battered individual.
There are 4 species of Monodactylus Moonfish or Moonies and 3 can be found in Africa:
the African in West Africa, the Silver on the Indian Ocean coast and the Cape or Oval on the southern coast. The Dwarf
Moony is native to southern Indian coasts.
