The Japanese Meagre is native to the Indo-Pacific from eastern Africa to Japan and Australia. It can reach 2 metres long. The tail is often spotted and sometimes the flank also; there is a row of silvery "buttons" along its flank.

Juveniles are found in shallow water including estuaries. The fish is classed as endangered.
