The Small Postman has many forms and subspecies over its range; most of the forms are mimicked by the
Common Postman as well as other Heliconian Butterflies such as Cydno.
The "standard" form, variations on the standard theme and rayed forms are covered in other pages (links below).
This page is a collection of other patterns which don't conform to those.
This black Longwing butterfly seems to be a Postman type but I haven't been able to identify it as a subspecies.
It is close to some, but is not H. erato nobilis nor H. melpomene plessini. The four small red spots close to the body suggest
H. erato parentage.
Apologies for this elderly, frayed butterfly, but it is the only one I have of this pattern.
A Postman-type, subspecies, form, hybrid or mimic.
The Butterfly above is also suspected to be a hybrid since I haven't been able to identify it as a valid subspecies (although it is close to some).
The three small, red spots on the underside hind wing close to the body suggest Common Postman (H. melpomene) parentage.
Slightly more regular forms of postmen.
