The White Stork breeds in continental Europe, North Africa and Central Asia, flying south to winter to sub-Saharan Africa and India.
They are heavy birds to fly such a distance over mountains and deserts.
White Storks are said in various mythologies to bring good luck/fertility (to those whose houses they build their large untidy nests on) and to bring babies.
Courting involves synchronised movements and a lot of noise from clapping the large beak.
While there are vagrant storks in the UK every year, they are being reintroduced to the UK
as a wild breeding bird in 2020 after a few hundred years' absence.
Marge (- you remember Stork margarine don't you?)
The White Stork builds large nests high in trees or on buildings. It often uses the same site
in subsequent years, building a new nest on top of one or more old nests.
