The American Golden Plover is very similar to the Pacific Golden Plover, Pluvialis fulva, and the European Golden Plover, Pluvialis apricaria, all of which have a black face and belly trimmed with white and a golden back in breeding plumage and the grey-brown above with white belly in winter plumage.
