The American Flamingo, also known as the Caribbean Flamingo, is native to the Caribbean, the Yucatan and the Galapagos Islands.
A large flamingo closely related to the Greater Flamingo, it can be distinguished by its strongly red-/orange-coloured head and neck plumage,
tricolor bill with orange middle section and grey (or pinky grey) legs, sometimes with pink knees.
Their diet of insects and crustaceans gives them their red colouring.
They live on muddy flats and salt lakes. They are threatened by building of roads, docks and
housing (local and tourism).
Juveniles sometimes have white bills with black, like the Chilean Flamingo, until the pinky-orange part develops.
Chicks are greyish brown.
