The Iris Lorikeet, sometimes called the Wedge-tailed Lorikeet, is native to forests of the Lesser Sunda Islands of Indonesia.
Male and female have similar plumage with the male slightly more brightly-coloured and
the female with some green mottling on the crown.
There are 3 subspecies or races/variants: the nominal P. i. iris in western Timor,
P. i. rubripileum in East Timor with full red cap, also called the Ruby-capped Lorikeet, and
P. i. wetterensis on the island of Wetar.
Many thanks to Iggino Van Bael for the photos in the row immediately above of
Iris Lorikeets with little or no purple after the red on their crown.
Its survival is threatened by habitat loss and illegal trapping.
Diet is mainly nectar, pollen and soft berries, buds and small fruits.
This one is not entirely vegetarian.
