Male and female have similar plumage with the male slightly more brightly-coloured and the female with some green mottling on the crown.

There are 3 subspecies or races/variants: the nominal P. i. iris in western Timor, P. i. rubripileum in East Timor with full red cap, also called the Ruby-capped Lorikeet, and P. i. wetterensis on the island of Wetar.
