The Blue-crowned Conure, also known as the Sharp-tailed Conure or Parakeet, is native to much of the northern half of South America.
There are five subspecies over its extensive range; one has a yellow eye-ring, one has darker blue cheeks
and one has a pinkish lower beak rather than black.
Juveniles don't have the blue head.
It has been moved from the "Aratinga" group of conures to its own group.
Its second Latin name means sharp-tailed since its long tail tapers to a point.
The undertail is red; tail may show a yellow tip.
