The Elegant Parrot, also called Elegant Grass Parakeet, is one of several small grass parrots from Australia,
some of whose females look similar to the olive green Elegant (e.g. Red-rumped, Hooded).
The Elegant Parrot looks similar to its relative, the Blue-winged Parrot below. Some Elegant
Parrots also have a small orange patch on their yellow bellies leading to confusion with their critically-endangered
relative, the Orange-bellied Parrot, which has a brighter green back, brighter yellow front and light blue border on
both the top and bottom of the brow band.
The male Elegant Parrot has similar plumage to the female instead of the bright colours of most other male grass parrots
(the female is a little duller with a narrower dark blue brow band; juveniles don't have the brow band).
Elegant Parrots are native to two separate regions, one in southwestern Australia and one in the southeast of South Australia.
The Blue-winged Parrot, also called the Blue-winged or Blue-banded Grass Parakeet, looks very like the Elegant.
It is native to southeast Australia, including Tasmania.
Unusually for parrots, some Tasmanian birds migrate north to the Australian
mainland for the winter (as does the Orange-bellied).
Females and juveniles are duller in colour than the males. Juveniles (above right) don't have the blue brow bands
and yellow bellies of the adult (above left).
