The Black Tern is native to North America, Europe and western Asia, migrating south to South America/Africa to winter.
It is found on freshwater lakes and marshes.
In flight in breeding plumage (above), the underside looks a little similar to its relative, the White-winged Tern,
which flies over part of the same range and with which it does hybridise. Its name is more indicative of the Inca Tern.
